Current History Introduction: The course is designed for students interested in the political and social issues that are currently the focus of the nightly news. What is happening in the Middle East? Will the United States go to war with Iraq? What is the situation in North Korea? How do you feel about the President’s tax program? Those issues and many more will be the heart of this class, especially how do those news items influence the world in which we live? Students are expected to read their newspapers or, at the very least, check my links for electronic news concerning politics, economics, terrorism, the Middle East, Iraq, North Korea, and other topics that students may find interesting. There is only one text for the class and involves the crisis in Israel, a region that will influence the news for years to come. Textbook: Gershom Gorenberg, The End of Days: Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount. New York: Oxford University Press, 2000. Attendance and Grades: Attendance is important and students will be graded not only on how they participate in the discussions during class, but also whether they come to class as well. Each student will start off with 100 points, miss three sessions and a student will lose fifty percent of that total. Another 100 points is based upon their level of participation during the class. Assignment for February 5, 2003: Check news items from As well as reading the Third chapter in Gorenberg's The End of Days.
