Final Examination

Directions: Select one of the following essays and write a detailed response incorporating the appropriate analysis and evidence in your essay. All papers are due no later than Friday, December 20, 2002, and should be no less than five pages in length.

1. Historians have long considered Louis XIV as the Sun King. What changes did Louis XIV bring to France and how did his aggressive foreign policy alienate his neighbors? How would you overall evaluate Louis XIV’s reign?

2. The late Carl Becker argues that Newton played a central role in the coming of the Enlightenment. What part did the great English scientist play in one of the most important intellectual movements in European history?

3. How did the desire to maintain the integrity of both the Habsburg line and the Habsburg Empire contribute to the War of the Austrian Succession? Who was the principal aggressor and why did the conflict spread through out the world?

4. One of the fundamental reasons for the outbreak of the Seven Years’ War was the situation in North America between Britain and France. What was the situation in North America that contributed to the war’s outbreak? What did the war say about the Americans and their relations with their English cousins?
