  2. How could the Turks commit the massacre of the Armenians? What was their rationale for committing this crime? What was the long-term impact of the first genocide of the twentieth century?
  3. Why did the Jews of Europe seek a homeland of their own? What was the impact of the Balfour Declaration on Palestine? Who did the British ultimately favor during the growing tensions in the region?
  4. How did the Jews in Palestine respond to the growing level of Arab violence and British indifference in the region?
  5. How did the early Israelis employ the use of terrorism in order to achieve a homeland in the Middle East?
  6. Why was it so difficult to achieve peace in Palestine from 1948 through 1967? Why did the Arabs fail to achieve their ultimate objective of destroying the Jewish state? What accounts for the victory of Israel over the Arab coalition in 1967?
  7. How did the Yom Kippur War in 1973 happen? What was Egypt's goal? Why were the Israeli's caught off guard? What was the long term consequences of that conflict concerning the Arab-Israeli relations?
  8. The Iranian Revolution in 1979 changed the dynamics of power in the Middle East. Why did it happen? Why did the West, including the United States, did not foresee the events that transpired in Iran in the middle 1970s that culminated in the coming of the Ayatollah Khomeini? Why was Washington so blind?
  9. Terrorism is a major concern throughout the world. What are the factors that explain the explosion of religious-based terrorism in the Middle East? How has the terrorist organizations that originated in the regions expanded their influence into Southeast Asia as well as Central Asia? Why did Afghanistan become a bastion for Al-Qaeda in the 1990s? What part did the United States, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia play in that tragedy?
