 QUESTIONS:

1. What were the Opium Wars? Why did they happen and what impact did they have on China? Explain.

2. Why didn’t Japan follow the Chinese model of Western domination during the course of Japanese history? What kept that from happening? What accounts for Japanese imperialism in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries? Explain.

3. Who was Sun Yat-Sen? What part did he play in the evolution of China in the twentieth century? What program did he try to introduce? What accounts for his failure to bring reform to China?

4. Why did the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941? How did the Japanese plan and the operation? Did Japan have any hope of succeeding?

5. The use of atomic weapons late in  World War II has contributed to lively historical arguments. Was Harry Truman justified in using the atomic bomb? What options did Truman face in 1945? Ultimately, why was the bomb used? Explain.

6. If you were an advisor to Harry Truman, what would have been your recommendation been?
